The Wine Photography Collection primarily draws from the Sonoma County Wine Library holdings, with additional contributions from the Sonoma County History & Genealogy Library. The collection includes images of historical interest of the Sonoma County wine industry from the 1870s through the present. These images portray the wine makers and companies of Sonoma County, past and present. They document the the early wineries, wine families and workers, the vineyards and wine production, and the many varieties of wine created in Sonoma County. Most photographic postcards and a selection of photographs were taken by commercial photographers and include captions. Some may also be found in the library online public access catalog. Consult the library for more information.
While the vast majority of photographs in this collection were created by unknown photographers, a few photographers are well represented, including:
The Google maps and Streetview images displayed below many of the Collection's images are based on the best information available in the records. In some cases, that information may be incorrect or Google was unable to interpret the address correctly (more than a few street names have changed over time and lots may have been renumbered). If you find an incorrect location for a particular image, we welcome corrections! Please use the comment feature at the bottom of the page and provide more accurate information if you have it. We verify the corrections and update our information.
We also welcome information on unidentified locations and people in our collections -- unfortunately, we have many such images . If you know something more, leave a comment on this site or at our Flickr collection of unidentified images .
The Sonoma County Library holds many historic and current images of Sonoma County people, events and locations. While we are in the process of moving all digitized images to this site, a portion of the collection is still available only through our library catalog at this time. We will continue to add retrospective images as well as new materials, but until all existing images have been added, please also check the Library's catalog , North Bay Digital Collections , in the Online Archive of California and the Library of Congress' American Memory .
We welcome your questions about materials in these collections and offers of donations of photographs or other materials related to Sonoma County history and life. For local history, contact Tony Hoskins or Katherine Rinehart at the Sonoma County History & Genealogy Library; for wine-related materials, please contact Jon Haupt at the Sonoma County Wine Library.
