Biographical or Historical Note
John and Cecelia Stiles were Christians who chose to travel the country to witness for Jesus Christ by traveling across the United States for over two decades with their mules and two wagons. The Stiles each walked in front of a wagon and never rode in the wagons. They had already traveled for about 10 years when they visited Sonoma County and wintered for several months at the DuVander Ranch in Windsor. See the Modesto Bee newspaper of Sept. 9, 1983 (section B-1) for a story by Becky McClure on the Stiles several years before they visited Sonoma County. John Stiles was also profiled in Lloyd Kahn's 2004 Shelter Publications book, Home work : handbuilt shelter (p. 174-175).
