Biographical or Historical Note
McGoldrick was serving as District Attorney in 1947 when he prosecuted the case of Sonoma High School teacher Thelma Jane Walter and her husband, David Warren, a chinchilla farmer, who was in fact Marrietta Cook. Walter lost her teaching position when Cook's true identity was revealed in newspaper stories and the couple were ultimately charged with three felonies. After a San Francisco psychologist interviewed the couple, he recommended to the DA that all charges against Mr. and Mrs. David Warren be dropped because no laws had been broken. Their marriage license was never voided by the court and is still on file at the Sonoma County Courthouse. See http://pre-1950sgaymarriage.org/ for more information.
